So I had awesome gear. I switched servers and it reset my character. Asked me to pick my gender again and spawned at the beach.

What bullshit is that? Is this a glitch or what

Try logging on to a different server. On one occasion; I had logged into a different server than my main and it gave me the option of making a new char and what not. I left the server, joined another- and I was on my guy again.

It's Alpha.

just log on to another server like LockeDown says. I had two characters running at one point. It's just Hive syncing or something similar.
