And no it cannot currently hold gear, if you try it will disappear.

I once stole someone's boat but it was almost out of fuel. The guy was probably finding more fuel for it. There's a sinked ship with lots of rock formations around it near the coast line which is a good hiding place but it's pretty far away( almost at the edge of the map)
