FPS Issues on Alienware M14x

Recommended Posts

So I've looked around online and videos on youtube and my M14x should be able to handle this game without a problem. Yet, I'm running this game on low settings and the FPS is still shitty as fuck (like 15 or under, sometimes even down to 10).

Whats wrong?

I use GameBooster which kind of helps, but I ran a PC diagnostic and was wondering if some of you could help me out here

I don't know if this tells my graphics card but it's an nVidia GT555m 1.5gb

Somerguy is an abvious troll.

I agree with the fact that Alienware is just a fancy name and overpriced but that to the side.

I expect your FPS to range anywhere between 20-30 if you run it 1920x1080. The problem with this is that if it dips below 18, which it will once every while. You have the feeling the game isn't running smooth anymore.

The only thing I can advice is go into the advanced graphics options menu and chang some settings. Arma is a pretty heavy game so a GT555M isn't gonna cut it.

Hope you can fix it by tingling with the settings, let me know.

You're playing on a laptop, you've a integrated graphic card and your cpu isn't too strong either 2.0ghz...

Arma is really intensive, but you should try swapping to some different servers, some servers have really fluid fps some don't. However, I don't see why you can't run it though.

My friend has one too, the FPS isn't that great either.

But anyway, Arma 2 is a heavy game, don't know if it really should be like this, but it is.

My friend can even run games like battlefield 3 in pretty decent graphic settings, using the GT555m (not running in 1080p).

Alienware might be a fancy name for a dell, but it doesn't defeat the fact that since Alienware has been around it has been posting most of the highest benchmarks on the most intense games. If any of you bothered to read his Diagnostics, you would notice that his rigs hardware is perfectly fine. I'm running a much lower-end PC and he's running the same FPS I am.

My thoughts: Your PC probably came with some performance software which allows you to tweak the performance of your hardware, this is called overclocking. I believe you may have messed with these settings. If possible, return them to default.

A second option is downgrading your Direct X version and seeing if you have better or worse FPS.

Third, updating your driver software, generally you can find these with google.

You have four gigs of Video memory, and 8 gigs of ram, your processor isn't bottlenecking the rest of your hardware, so it's obviously a software issue. If you've tried multiple different solutions to no avail, I would suggest formatting your PC's hard drive. This is a simple process that takes nothing but a bit of time. It will wipe your harddrive and install a fresh OS with nearly no drivers, so you'll need to update completely. After this, you should be running normally.

Based off of a general idea, I'd vote you should run about 50 FPS on medium to high settings.

Are there any other high quality games that you've played on your PC without any problems?

Posted this in a similar thread. I'd give it about a 90% chance of fixing your problem. The i7's seem to have trouble with this game, now sure why.

I had a similar problem. There are many potential fixes cycling around on the forums.

I have an i7-2720QM processor for my mobile pc and it seems to have issues running DayZ mod but not ARMA II itself. I tried about 1000 different optimization tricks. Disabled core parking, took off intel boosting options, changed launch options, etc...

The exact problem I had could be described like this: I can run Day Z mod on the absolute lowest settings or the absolute highest settings and get the same problem either way. It was actually easier to play with much higher graphics settings rather than low settings. The problem was that the game would run great for about a minute or two, and then every 3 seconds or so (sometimes more frequently) the FPS would drop significantly to unplayable levels. I have now discovered that it was probably the GPU or CPU getting too hot and the intel smart boost was backing my CPU off (800 Mhz instead of the normal 2.2Ghz to boosted 3.3Ghz) to more rapidly cool the computer off.

I downloaded a program called ThrottleStop by TechPowerUp.

WARNING: Before you use this program read up on how it works. DO NOT just install it and start clicking all of the fancy buttons because it will probably cause your CPU/GPU to heat up extensively if you do not know what you are doing. Luckily most computers shut off before anything bad can happen to your hardware...but be careful and USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Here is the link to a very helpful ThrottleStop guide:

http://forum.noteboo...stop-guide.html

Here is the download link that I used:

http://www.techpower...eStop_4.00.html

You can use this program to manage the CPU speed and GPU/CPU temps to make the game run more smoothly. Also if you are running a laptop try propping the back of your unit up on a hardback textbook (or get a good cooling pad) because this significantly reduced the heat of my computers components.

Once again, be careful with this program.

Also, it might be nice if someone with authority could make a post about this program (potentially pin it) and the success that it can give users that are experiencing the graphical stutter issues. I can play great using this utility properly.

My thoughts exactly. ThrottleStop is an alternative if your PC did not already come with hardware clocking software.
