I think this depends on the server. I see a blue icon showing where i am on my map (US 446).

No. The map is a paper map not a GPS. Find a road and follow it till you find a roadsign. Or use your compass and look at which way the road curves and you can find out where you are.

That was my assumption too, but on this server i found a map and it also shows your position! (I don't have a GPS).

best way to train your map skills is get lost, multiple times, sooner or later you will figure out what keypoints helped you figure out your way, thats what helped me, but ill probably get lost again, its a common thing i think or hope actually :D
