ABORT 5 Posted May 19, 2012 Seriously, like a message that pops up that says "Server will restart in 10 minutes" or something?
Pallidum 33 Posted May 19, 2012 I imagine that some of the server restarts are due to crashes. There are also servers that will restart on a regular basis in order to restart any broken scripts (loot or zombie spawns for example), and I'm not sure if there are any means of automatically broadcasting a warning prior to such a shutdown.I'm sure the dayz team and the server admins will try to work something out if possible, but keep in mind that this is still an alpha, and there may be more important issues that need to be addressed first. Exuve 1 Posted May 19, 2012 Generally, on Dallas 1, I send out a 5 minute warning to find a safe place to log out and to save vehicles or anything of that nature. The only thing server operators can do is send out a text warning unless the mission is modified to allow for a flashing text warning.
MasterCheese (DayZ) 0 Posted May 19, 2012 If I'm doing a manual restart, I will always send people a warning via admin chat, but sometimes the server will crash, and I know some servers have automatic restarts to keep scripts (Like zombie spawning or looting, as mentioned) from breaking.I'd like to think most admins make some attempt to warn people, but a lot of time it's unavoidable. Where the restart is controlled, my players will always get a warning, and a long one at that -- ten minutes, typically. Only two circumstances stop that from happening:1. A crash. They happen, and we can't warn them because we can't expect them.2. An emergency shutdown. It's only happened once, but if the server absolutely has to come down now, it absolutely has to come down now.I have a sanity restart set for 6:25 and 6:30 if myself or another admin isn't there to monitor the server. I've even recorded a macro for the RCon run locally that will automatically warn players as those times approach.Any admin worth their stuff, and this seems to be the general vibe you get here, will warn players the server needs to come down. Again, the exceptions are a crash or an emergency shut down.
Freeborne (DayZ) 7 Posted May 19, 2012 Well I can't speak for every server, but the DayZ Dev's update ours, and make config changes from time to time (without us knowing about though). They've undone all our FireDaemon Pro setup, and replaced it with DayZ Server Monitor about 12 hours ago. It now restarts our servers and Hive apps every 6 hours, regardless of if they only restarted (after crashing) 10 minutes ago, or if it's all running perfectly. Players of course are not notified because it's automatic. The belief was that a game server will run really bad after 6 hours, so a restart fixes that. As you can tell, that theory has it's own flaws too.If we (cm or myself) are doing manual restarts to fix something, we always sent a global SAY via RCON, giving ppl 3 minutes to save their cars, gear, etc. But, we're different. We believe in common curteousy :( Now with this new app though, we can't do manual restarts unless we close the whole DayZ Server Monitor app down, which means closing down our other server running off the same box.But it's okay. It's an alpha...
