Zombie Pathfinding

Recommended Posts

Did a quick search and found nothing with the topic above, so apologies if it's already been discussed to death.

As I recall somewhere, zeds tend to run around in strange patterns due to their civilian AI, which prefers to take less direct routes to where it is going or some such.

Is this something that can be circumvented or "Fixed" some time in the future?

As it stands, the best way to kill a zed is to let it attack, then move backwards as its script repeats a few times (attacking empty space). Killing them while they run at you is extremely difficult considering they often run in erratic and nonsensical patterns (Like running down the street away from you and making two 90 degree turns to get back at you).

I assume fixing/replacing/improving the code that determines their path finding could also fix their issue with walking through walls or teleporting into buildings, though attacking through walls will probably always exist (Due to their attack being a script of damage and animation when within a range).

This is a necessary change, but I don't think it'll happen for a long while, since it isn't something that can be fixed in a short amount of time.

One short term solution to the erratic movement would be a slight speed nerf (I don't mean make them into shamblers, just...not olympic sprinters).

Agreed...zombies sprinting around while making 90 degree turns at random intervals with no loss of momentum makes anything other than exploiting the AI pretty pointless.

I doubt they'd leave it the way it is. But I agree they are wonky. I usually just run through towns now and chain them into barns. So that I can get a handle on them. I hate doing it 'cause it's kinda cheap, but I gotta do what I gotta do, to survive :P. When gathering them they always seem to want to get behind me. They will make wide ass half circles to get there too. Would be nice to get one that at least cuts me off at least or something.
