Finding a location to pitch a tent?

In all seriousness though, what type of terrain permits tents? I'm on top of a mountain and it won't let me use my tents to store all my loot. The location was relatively flat, but does grass stop it? :S

Most of the time what I do is I keep my gear screen open, try to pitch the tent if it does not work I just inch my way forward and keep clicking "Pitch Tent" It works eventually. Good luck!

Yeah, just press G and walk around all over the place while mass-clicking pitch tent.
