Using night vision crashes the game

Everytime I put on my NVG's or look through the scope of the FN FAL ANPV S4 the game becomes unplayable. It works for a while (like 10 seconds) but then I get a black screen and after I go to Windows I get a message saying my graphics card has encountered an error. I have no problems with the game otherwise but using NV is impossible because of this.

I've got an Ati HD 6970 with the newest drivers, 8.98-120611a-141402C-ATI.
