my 2 cents worth

Recommended Posts

Firstly I would like to thank Rocket for creating probably the most amazing mod that has ever graced the gaming world. It's not just entertaining, its more absorbent than anything I've ever played.

Secondly I'd like to thank the mods on this forum, their task is to maintain balance, a job which is under-appreciated most of the time.

BUT, the rule that server admins cannot kick for friends is seriously out of touch with reality. In an ideal world it'd be workable, but it's not, so it's not.

Not allowing server owners to lock servers is a mistake too, if a server crashes, and they do frequently, getting 40+ players playing again all at the same time causes overload on the database, hence debug forest. Locking the server down for 10 players at a time is the only way to get everyone playing quickly and smoothly. But this is the only reason to lock a server, anything more is abuse of powers. That said, the admins bought and paid for the server, it's their to do as they wish.

Catch 22: no server, no mod, no mod, no servers. We can't live without one another.

Main Problem:

The mod has grown beyond belief and in reality there are insufficient servers, hence all the problems listed above.

Solution:

To everyone who complains about being kicked... rent a server yourself with some friends and help ease the burden.

This is just my 2 cents worth.

I find it ironic that the vast majority of people complaining about this rule that is supposedly so hard on those that run servers do not, in fact, run servers.

Most server hosts are fine with it, and those that aren't alright with it are in a very small minority.

If there was so much demand for this rule to be changed, we'd have complaints from people running servers coming out the wazoo. That is not the case.

The majority of server admins are ignoring the rule completely and keeping their heads down below the firing line. I have no problem saying my piece. It needs saying.

It's terribly sad that The Angry German shut down the server in protest, I'd say that all other admins need to do the same but I doubt it'd happen or anyone would pay much attention to the few that do.

As long as servers don't get shut down and the threat of IP removal is an empty one then all is good.

you realise people are scared of you locking them out of the database if they tell you to go jump oilman...

Main reason I stopped running my server is I had a dev say they had recorded my ip... drew my own conclusions and shut it down.

if thats how you treat server owners its no wonder there is a shortage, not to mention the prohibitive costs of doing so.

server owners are all doing you a service and allowing the mod to succeed by providing expensive infrastructure you would otherwise be unable to provide.

but you have all server owners necks in a noose currently. they have no choice but to use your database in order to run servers which means if they do not do exactly what you say. and lets face it you guys are pretty anal about alot of things. you will simply cut them off.

granted, shared database means someone cheating in one server is cheating in them all. and that is an issue. as an extension of that philosophy you are forcing your own ideals on server owners that go beyond the realms of keeping the main database protected from hackers, farmers. ect.

sure you have a vision for how the game should be played, and thats fine. but you do not own the servers and should not be going and telling people how to play. after all even people farming vehicles are taking part in an activity that would be persued by some survivors in a zombie apocolypse. while on the outside it looks like it is unbalancing. from a realism perspective. such things happen and the server will easily roll with it and be able to accomidate such things.

by rigidly controlling how players play the game you are stopping the game from being truly emergant and evolving as players learn and survive in the environment you have created for them.

so give server owners a chance. let them build communities, let them do what they need to do in order to keep thier little bit of the dayz environment running smoothly and efficiently.

if something really becomes dead weight, you can always blacklist them.

no offence, simply my opinion. ill shut up now :P
