Unique character per server (Ghosting/Server hopping fix)

Recommended Posts

Each server you play on has it's own unique version of your character. If you change servers you don't spawn in the same place with the same equipment.

MMO's do it, probably for some of these reasons. I think it would stop server hopping for gear and ghosting.

I have no idea, technically, if the devs have resources to implement this though.

Wouldn't work with certain things currently in the game, like all the people popping boners over putting razor wire everywhere, blocking buildings and whatnot.

I wouldn't be very happy if I logged in and didn't have a toolkit to find myself trapped in a building, server hopping is the only way around this at the moment short of hoping someone comes along with a toolkit that decides not to shoot you on sight.

There are multiple reasons to change servers, also sometimes servers jsut dissapear completely for whatever reason. Maybe it lags like hell or whatever.

This doesn't prevent you playing on other servers.

Also, razorwire blocking buildings is an issue in itself and it needs a seperate fix.

Server hopping sucs big time! It is not ment to be a part of the game.

I will support ANY mechanism that will prevent it. At least 5 min unconciusness for changing server if last one is still online, but no penalty if it is not done at least half an hour since last logout. Legit logout, not alt-f4-ing. Which is another exploit that needs fixing.

Imho this two should be top of the fix list for not ruining the mod (server hopping and alt-f4-ing)

What about lag problems? Like if you lose connection due to a terrible internet connection? than what? you are locked out of the game for 30 min cause of your internet connection? or you join a server (Like for me, Chicago 48) and you get constant studders? so you leave, only to realize that you can't play anymore cause of a 30 minute wait?

Also, to OP, Each server having a seperate character, IMHO is a bad idea, the fact that you can play on a server for several hours, than have it crash and be offline for days is a serious problem. for this to work, the map would need to be WAYYYY bigger, and the need for more stable servers to be had. Not to mention the fees that will be incorperated with having every single server needing to save character data rather than a single mother server... That would cost thousands, and most server hosters would drop the server.

Your server full? You're fucked.

MMOs do this because you play in fairly MASSIVE worlds with usually thousands of players.

Not a small zone when compared to MMOs, or a population of 25-70.

I love being able to play on any server I want to. Not for server hopping, but due to the fact that servers die, change, get moved, turn into other arma mod servers or completely crash, never to come back. Some don't install the newest updates and others haven't been restarted in ages. Even worse, what happens when a hacker hits your server?

Server hopping is a problem and the devs are currently trying many different ways to fix this, you can even find some of these using the SEARCH bar at the top of the forums. Until then, either sit outside the barracks at the NWAF, or hang around a tree just outside of the Balota Airfield's ATC's back door. You'll get multiple kills and perhaps even rare loot. Fun times for when you want to shoot fish in a barrel, but the fresh spawns at Cherno and Electro aren't doing it for you. Plus you help the community.

Having to start with a clean slate every time I change servers is not ideal to me. Especially, if I'm playing with a group and this means we would be scattered throughout the world with nothing. I know you're solution to this is not transfering servers, but as people have said server population would be a problem.

A group of well esablished players WILL have a base camp and a surplus of goodies set up on a particular server ex. cars, busses, tents, and maybe even a helicopter. Filled with all kinds of weapons and munitions. As you know these camps are raidable and in my opinion really the anchor that keeps the server hopping boat tied down.

I think this is a really great idea. Having each character instance bound to the server is a very elegant yet simple hypothetical solution. Some people posing in this thread clearly do not understand what you mean. I'm pretty sure rocket and co have already thought about this and perhaps all that extra character metadata in the hive might be too costly?
