Server disconnect, endless loading, endless "Waiting for character to create" leads to total loss of character?

Hi,

today I was playing for a couple of minutes, running around at the airstrip. Then the server stops responding and I loose the connection.

I was trying to access a new server, I tried out like 10. Everytime I was either stuck at "Loading" or "Waiting for character to create".

Half an hour later I was able to login into a server, only to find out that apparently my character was lost.

I had to create a new one. So basically all my effort just vanished, why is that? Did my character die trying to attempt to load the game? I was sure you don't spawn until you fully loaded the game, or am I wrong here?
