When I spawn I am amongst rolling hills and nothing else, not even foliage. I have my weapons and food and whatnot but everywhere I go there is nothing but more hills.

Run East/South East for approx 26 Km or Respawn.

are you kidding me? is this true?

I don't have a compass so I dont know which way is which but I have a lot of ammo for my weapons and food (first time ever) so I'd really like to come back

Clouds always move from West to East and if it's night you can find the North Star and navigate that way.

I ran for 30 minutes before I gave up and suicided with a grenade I had.

Yes, from what i heard the "endless" hills you mention is what they call the Debug area.

There is nothing there, but you're still in the map from what i know, i could be wrong.

If i'm right, you could be far west, in this case going east would make you come back to the map.

Search youtube for videos that teach you how to find north! You might find useful information there (i actually saw a bunch of videos there).

Also that isn't the debug plains.

Debug plains was a forest where you character would appear upon loading.

However the other information is correct.

Debug Forest is a lot closer and easier to get out of and you are surrounded by trees

Debug Plains is approx 26 Km away (very hard to get out of) and you are surrounded by nothing.
