Track IR..Look around using your head

Recommended Posts

I use Track IR 5 with Dayz. For you who doesn't know what this is its a smal thing you clip on a cap and put on your head and then a sensor connected via usb to your computer placed infron of you. When you move your head irl the head of your character does the same so its like irl, you can look around, up down as you do when you click the button for free look, you can even tilt your head to look around corners. You set how sensetive the sensor should be and how far you can turn your head and speed so ofcourse you dont move your head 90 degrees irl when you do it ingame cause it would be quite imposible to see the screen at the same time :P

Check it out if your interested

This looks awesome! If you have recording software could you do me and i'm sure others a favor and make a quick video showing both first and third person how it looks in game?

Because if I look behind me in real life I obviously wont be able to see my monitor which seems like an issue.

I had a go with it while at the DayZ booth at Rezzed.

It was quite interesting although it spazzed out on me alot, I have a feeling it was something to do with people moving about behind me and confusing the sensor.

Damn I need to try DayZ with my TrackIR 4 someday. Playing IL-2 and RoF with this gadget was awesome already...

Best way to stop it spazzing out is to stop all axis except y and x.

All the other stuff screws it up for dayz. I also use the deadzone setting so small movements don't move the camera.

Its pretty awesome though.

Here's an old comparison video that I made when I first got mine for Arma2 -- I've got the rig attached to the camera, and turn it on and off while looking around so you can see what it does.

You don't have to look behind you -- you can tweak the sensitivities. I've got mine set up so that a ~45º rotation of your head (max I can turn it and still comfortably see the screen) corresponds to an almost 180º rotation in-game, so I can look over my shoulder. You can also zoom in and out by moving closer/further from your screen.

Probably wasn't tweaked/positioned correctly. Not sure which rig you were using -- the "pro" rig is a headphone-clip with 3 IR-LEDs on it vertically, and is very stable. The other type of rig clips horizontally onto the brim of a baseball cap and instead uses retro-reflective paint to bounce IR light emitted from the camera back into the camera, and is less stable. People behind you should have no impact, unless they're emitting infra-red light, or wearing retro-reflective clothing (e.g. safety vests)!! N.B. halogen light-globes and candles do emit strong IR, so if any of these were in the camera's FOV, it would screw it up.

You've got to ensure that the camera has a good view of the rig, and that any head movement that you make won't take the rig outside of the camera's FOV. Also, by default, sideways movement will be translated into leaning in-game, which can screw you up.

You naturally move your sitting position while playing, so every now and then you've got to hit the "re-center" button (F12 for me) while looking straight ahead to tell it what your new comfortable spot is.

It does take a long time to set it up correctly, to tweak it to your liking, and a lot of practice before it feels natural, but afterwards it does feel completely natural. Now when I play Arma without it, or start playing BF3/etc, I unconsciously "look around" with my head, fully expecting the game's camera to move, and totally have my immersion shattered when the game doesn't do so... ;)

Do you mean yaw and pitch? The rest are ignored, except x, which is lean left/right. Edited by ActionMan

Yup...been using Track IR with ArmA for quite a while. Mines currently broken...need to upgrade it to the new one anyway. Takes a bit of configuring to your liking but it is very nice to use.
