I logged out safely alone in a building this morning.. I was not being chased.. or under fire.. All was well and quiet.

I logged in today to : "Please choose gender"

WTF? I was not dead... I did not die..

(I know it's an ALPHA.. but can anyone explain at all?)

I had that happen, I just exited out and logged in again and didn't get the prompt for character select.

You may have joined a private server which are not connected to the HIVE database, so you started a new character. If you toggle Battleye to YES in the filters you should be able to join a HIVE connected server and still have all your items.
