Spawning in the ocean?

My friend spawned in the ocean today and we're not sure why. He swam to shore and it's just a barren open field with nothing there.

Anyone spawn in the ocean before? How does he get back to the regular play area?

did he murder someone?

there seems to be a glitch related to skin change. when you murder someone and your sking changes to bandit it sometimes glitches the game for you.
