First impression: This sucks.

@ Black Dow get my beans sir, I hate people on this forum who bash on Cod all the time. I can explan on how Cod CAN BE more of a team controlled game then battlefield 3, I bet you people think "what the fuck are you saying you cod kid!" Well I doubt anyone who plays battlefield 3 has has four squads (64 player game) in teamspeak/some other voice thing all magically working together to win, now this becomes invalid if you play smaller games like squad deathmatch, ect. But unless your fully communicating with your team, I would say your just runnning around blindly like kids on Cod with no Full partys, your leaving yourself to be killed by unknown variables. Now why is Cod CAN BE more of a team controlled game ( if you choose too, not everyone plays by themselves) bcause its easier to gather 6-8 people and communicate. I say this because most Cod bashes are people who play Battlefield 3 smh 9sorry for assumptions but you do the same with Cod)

I don't play either Battlefield or CoD regularly. My multiplayer game of choice is Team Fortress 2. I just think this stupid elitist attitude that "COD IS FOR N00BS" is stupid. The fact is that is that DayZ is extremely off-putting to new players, and if some of you don't see that as a problem, you're delusional. A lot of cool people will never get into this game because of a combination of the steep learning curve and the unintuitive controls. Everyone on these forums being assholes to them won't help the issue.

CoD IS an EASY to get into game for NEW players.

There's nothing wrong with being new or inexperienced and I'm not saying there is. A lot of NEWER/YOUNGER gamers seem to have a set of easy mode expectations for the games they play. And in their feature requests they are asking for the games that they know.

This results in a homogenization (this word means "making everything the same") of the art and entertainment form. Not every game needs or wants to attract the entirety of the prepubescent gaming community and their console roots. Some games are purposefully a bit more difficult and exceedingly violent to cater to the middle aged gaming community. MANY games start out much more difficult and true to their premise before they get beaten down and patched to be accessible to anyone.

It's complaints from new players that brought WoW from challenging to a hand-held ride to max level. I'd rather that their input be ignored than legitimized.

And finally the majority of his complaints weren't about ease of use, they're about it being an Alpha. Which apparently he never got the memo on, nor that it's a mod. So it's an early version of a non-game.

All I'm saying is that approaching something new, difficult and slightly broken with a "wtf i can't even do this?!?!" and beginning with a solemn "so i've given this a 20 minute shot"... Well I'm sure he has many younger, less intelligent or perhaps, more compassionate supporters out there. I'm just saying that he came at us with a full case of "I didn't read the fucking manual and I'm mad that I'm not figuring it out right away"

Wait.... did I just read... someone thinks people bash CoD because they are BF3 fans? THEY ARE THE SAME FUCKING GAME. Hence my accurate assertion that kiddies demands make all the games the same. Guns should be fair, they should be fun... OOH AND I GET TO LEVEL UP? CLASSES?! UNLOCK WEAPONS?!

I bash CoD and BF3 because they aren't fun, they're geared for maximum access so they aren't interesting. Just like cable news, the more people it's trying to please, the more peripheral and irrelevant it becomes.

But here's a solid example. The non-realistic insta regen health style gameplay of BOTH games. Just to start. That's a trend that became homogenized once every kid got used to not having to know where a medkit is. And it's not an old trend either, maybe 6-8 years tops, pretty sure it started with Halo 2.

Blahhhhh Anyway. Just don't like angrily asked questions that are actually easily researchable. The end. lol

His post basically read like this:

"MY EXPERT CONCLUSION AFTER STUDYING THE COMPOSITION OF THE MOON FOR 20 MINUTES: ITS DEF CHEESE"

And that's all I'm saying lol

Listen, I don't care what kind of games you play and if you think the games he or she plays or doesn't play is stupid, that's your business. If it bothers you, then ignore it.

What is a bit irritating... is having someone make a clearly uneducated aggressive post even titled in unnecessary aggressive way that isn't a good start when you're asking the community for help. "FIRST IMPRESSION: THIS SUCKS." That's not going to get you some intelligent and detailed responses helping you overcome your hurdles with the game.

I agree with a lot of ppl saying that the internet can be filled with a lot of hatred and that rings true for ALL forums. When I see those type of posts or responses the best thing to do is ignore them because trying to have a conversation with such a person is never going to end the way you want it to (CoD vs BF vs ......).

The above though does not relate to this person who clearly came out guns blazing stinking of ignorance then wants to play the victim card trying to convince people he came here with good intentions and only wanted to share his so called educated opinion. Anyone with half a mind can read his original post and can make the clear assumption that he did zero homework before he purchased the game then wants to shit all over that which he doesn't understand when ANYONE can google how to insert anything here in DayZ and not only will you find articles but videos as well....

"after playing for about 20 minutes I don't really want to continue. "

^ That's more than enough evidence

To Summarize:

It's all about wording and conveying your feelings and opinions in a proper method.

If people are just flaming you because that's the nature of the internet then so be it, ignore those people. If however, you try and lash out at a community for something that you have no knowledge of then expect backlash.

RESPECT to Black Dow.

Controls are currently HORRIBLE. I've googled, Youtube and followed all instructions but still the torch wont turn on. "L" doesn't work. ";" doesn't work. So I lose my character to the dark after investing 6+ hours of gameplay. Most ashamedly to get that far I had crept up behind a player "LIAM" who hadn't noticed me while he was noobing around with the piss poor inventory system and crowbarred him in the head. LIAM had guns and ammo I had torch and crowbar. Having stolen kit that would have taken me ages to find I felt really shit. I suspect he'd put several hours in to find his meagre gear.

Really sorry LIAM.

Yes there was a narrative a story I made myself but the controls certainly got in the way.

My main concern, and I hope Rocket reads this, is that DayZ could be somewhat of a pyramid/ponzy scheme. Those that started out, were totally savvy to the reality of the game, were able to team up or bandit as their hearts desired, those individuals will have got the best from the game. As interest rises more people join there will be more spawn killers and less collaborators.

Without easier access in terms of playbility the numbers will whither.

A lot of flamers will tell me this is a good thing.

Meh.

People are flaming you because you played for 20 minutes then wrote a thread about how it's too hard (titled "First Impressions: This sucks." no less) then followed it up by complaining an alpha mod isn't polished. You should feel happy anyone is helping you at all.

Play the Arma tutorials for 30 minutes to get used to the controls and how the inventory, backpacks, etc. work. Spend another 15 minutes watching the DayZGuidez videos on youtube.

EDIT: Check this thread for further help.

Hi Guys, I'm a new player. I just had a comment on the video guide posted above. In it, he suggests as a way to begin the game, running at full speed and just zipping by all the zombies, using indoor corners to slow them down and grabbing all the loot you can while running. It seems like that may not be in the spirit of the game as far as realism, immersion and role-playing.

I know that personally, if I was trying to survive a zombie apocaplypse, I'd be crawling in the dirt hiding. And that's how I try to play. It seems like the creator of that video is exploiting the AI pathfinding indoors to grab loot while zipping around. Are there better videos that are more in the spirit of the game?

Thanks all.

**Oh, also I had the opposite reaction as the OP. I played DayZ for 20 minutes and was hooked...!

Ok, so I just bought the games and spent hours setting up this game because it was rumored to be awesome, and after playing for about 20 minutes I don't really want to continue.

It's all blurry as hell (is it like this for everyone?) so I can barely see what's what, I can't seem to open doors, I found an axe but apparently that only chops trees or something, I couldn't figure out how to apply a bandage when I was bleeding from a zombie attack, everything just seems ridiculously overcomplicated and what's even the point of this game? The way I was described I imagined a game similar to STALKER and I have no problem with things being hard or anything but this isn't hard it's just boring.

I thought it was supposed to be realistic, so why can't I enter 90% of the buildings I come by? Surely I could have just broken a window with my flashlight or a rock if the door was locked? I can't even jump..

It seems like it's just a rather poorly constructed world filled with static props and the occasional item spawn, and of course a ton of zombie spawns. Is that all this game is? Just running around looking for items and staying away from zombies?

DAYZ is what you call a simulation game, it is meant to be real, therefore like eating, drinking, healing, etc is "boring". If you come here to just shoot everything on sight try Left 4 Dead.

From your information you basically need to practice being patient, and stop being whinnie, I certainly didn't when I got chased by 13 zeds on my first spawn. then getting killed by another player.

And stop complaining about the map, its 225 km2 of land you could explore, and yet you say this map suck because you can't enter a building?

Not that I've seen so far. The sneaking around just boils down to crouch walking and prone while using alt+look (turning head but not body) to know where zeds are. This however puts you in danger of other players as you are an easy sniper shot. You could use this as a realistic reason to run though a city, if you knew other people wanted to kill you and you didn't want to hang around. long.

There may not be many tutorials of a 'stealthy' Cherno/Elektro run for the simple fact that it would be long and rather boring/tedious to watch. If you take anything away from DayZGuideZ loot runs, use the path that he took, to cut down on travel time and effectively scout for other players along the way.

I think it really boils down to whether you want to play the game as a simulation or whether you want to get the best gear and stay alive for long periods of time. Stealth is certainly more realistic, but it's also the best way to get killed very quickly by a sniper. I tried stealth half a dozen times. I'd crawl and sneak around like Solid Snake for an hour, collecting items, avoiding zombies, and hoping to hit the jackpot and find a good gun. Then, inevitably, some asshole sniper would shoot me in the back while I was crawling toward a loot building despite the fact that I was completely unarmed.

Stealth is fun, for a time at least. But eventually you get sick of being sniped by people for no reason and decide to use the smash-and-grab method. You get in, grab some good gear, and get out as quickly as possible. The game is much more fun for me when I actually have the tools to help me survive.

I suppose if you played alone on an empty server this game could be a great survival simulator, but as long as there are other people playing with you your best bet is going to be getting in fast and getting out before anyone has a chance to mark you.

I guess this is a matter of interpretation. In a way, yes, you know you are exploiting the AI because it has trouble with line of sight and inside buildings. In reality though, if you were being chased my zombies that had trouble tracking you if they couldn't see you, or were too deranged to figure out where you went if you went inside a house, would you not use that to your advantage? I guess it depends on if you consider the zombies' behavior a bug or not. Since zombies arent real, I'd say its up to you to decide.

I personally think either is valid. Most zombie movies (if you want to consider this as a basis for reality) have both people attempting stealth and people 'making a run for it'.

Now, if zombies, for example, couldn't see past an imaginary line dividing two flat pieces of road, then yes, I would say you are exploiting the game mechanics.

Senz, there's nothing wrong with your pc or your graphics card. Your screen is blurry because you are bleeding to death. You got scratched by a zombie and you need food and or a blood transfusion. Good luck, I hope someone will help you.

I think I know what he's talking about. My screen (by that I mean the landscape graphics) was blurry until I turned post processing off.

So you had to kill someone and you felt bad? When was the last time ANY game made you feel anything like that?

I would say this is why this mod is SO OVERWHELMINGLY successful.

And no...numbers will not whither if access isn't made easier. I think the opposite, if this game became as dumbed down as every other shooter/rpg/zombie game out there (as others have described in this thread already), THEN the numbers will wither.

As long as players FEEL frustrated and it is a challenge and interactions with other players actually make you feel something besides the 2 second twitch and shoot thrill, then this game will succeed.

As for controls...I went through the learning curve several years ago when I started playing Arma2 and thought the same. A month or so into playing I changed my mind. The controls are natural once you get used to them, just as they are with any other game when you get used to them. More complexity does not make it horrible, it just makes it take longer to learn. Learn patience.

Ah right. I have mine turned off. He was saying he'd been attacked, and as I'm currently lying in a heap in Cherno with about 4 teaspoons of blood and the entire world is a grey blur, I guessed he might be bleeding to death like me. :)

If there some key shortcut to take people to youtube on this site? Twice now I've had to restart replies to topics as I keep being taken to day z vids on youtube. Odd.

How do you mean? Like showing people youtube videos on the forum? If you just put the url by itself, it auto-embeds it into the post. Like so...

Well.. this is just fun. I've seen about 20 guys thus far and every single one of them have shot me.

Feeling very frustrated. Don't get me wrong, I've found food, weapons etc.

Maybe it's time to look for group since it's impossible to find good guys in-game.

That's a shame, if you're going to pay money for something you might as well give it more of a chance than twenty minutes.

It's all blurry as hell (is it like this for everyone?) so I can barely see what's what ...

Turn off post processing.

... I can't seem to open doors ...

Not every building is interactable. A map of which are and what spawns in them is available via dayzdb.com/map and it's trivial to keep it open while playing DayZ.

... I found an axe but apparently that only chops trees or something ...

It chops players and zombies real good too, right click and remove from toolbelt to equip it to your rifle slot (When you find a rifle right click it again to return it to your toolbelt instead of dropping it).

... I couldn't figure out how to apply a bandage when I was bleeding from a zombie attack ...

Right click on bandage, apply bandage.

... everything just seems ridiculously overcomplicated ...

The mod is built on ARMA II, ARMA II is a simulator. Simulators typically have complex engines and a steep learning curve, however if you launch ARMA II there is a boot camp mode available that can introduce you to several core concepts that are helpful in DayZ as well (No parachuting yet, but that's okay).

... and what's even the point of this game?

It's a survival sim. It's fun to find ways to survive, it's fun to outsmart other Scavengers and Bandits. It's fun never knowing what's around the next corner, and yes, sometimes dieing is a lot of fun too.

The way I was described I imagined a game similar to STALKER and I have no problem with things being hard or anything but this isn't hard it's just boring.

ARMA II and DayZ aren't exactly action packed (except for those rare nerve wracking firefights or swarm encounters) but I think that is part of its appeal. The low points get you comfortable, only for the more intense moments to shake you to your very core.

I thought it was supposed to be realistic, so why can't I enter 90% of the buildings I come by? Surely I could have just broken a window with my flashlight or a rock if the door was locked?

If the world was ending I'd brick up my doors and windows too. But as I said, not every building is interactable, and a list can be found on DayZdb.com/map

I can't even jump..

You can vault, which is sufficient to move over most uneven obstactles. Hit V.

It seems like it's just a rather poorly constructed world filled with static props and the occasional item spawn, and of course a ton of zombie spawns. Is that all this game is? Just running around looking for items and staying away from zombies?

I take it you spawned in Wilderness, and maybe stumbled into Kamenka only to get clobbered to death and eaten, if that was your only experience I can sympathize with your opinion. But the game is so much more than that, and if you're not willing to give it a chance you're missing out. I've played Video Games since I was a toddler in the late 80's, and near as I can tell DayZ is unique. The only comparison I can draw is to the Old School Delta Force's, that gave you big huge maps and a massive tool bag to dick around with.

If only DayZ had armories like DF2 ... C'est la vie.

this game isnt for everyone i like how its keeps the arcade players out, this is by far the most fun i have had in a shooter/survival game. long drawn out moments marked by quick fights of complete terror then back to running north again, love it. come to the NW airfield and bring me ammo and food.
