spawning with a weapon has been removed since 1.7.1 i think... not sure of the exact update #.

If you were able to use axes you found around towns it would make the game so much more balanced.

Uhh... you can. When you pick up an axe it goes to your toolbelt. You have to right-click the axe and click on 'Remove From Toolbelt'. The axe will go to your primary weapon slot and you can use it.

Right click the axe again and click 'Add to toolbelt' to put it back when you find a new primary weapon that you wanna use.
