Lag Spikes, Help!

Recommended Posts

I have a good computer, not great but good enough that i never have problems running games. I have all of the settings on the lowest possible option and still get a lag spike about every 10-12 steps regardless of what server I am in. Any ideas on how to fix this?

P.S. I checked and I don't have anything running in the background that may slow down my computer.

Thanks for your help.

Processor: Intel® Core2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz 2.53 GHz

Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB

Good way to check is to see if it is the same with arma offline :) core2duo is getting on a bit now and you do not mention your graphics card or os.

My anti-virus did exactly what you're describing, and some of my friends had the exact same problem. We uninstalled the anti-virus and everything was smooth sailing from there on out. If you're out of options I'd suggest trying that.

If you are using the Six Launcher close it after you have picked a server, it auto-refreshes the server list in the background and will affect your PC.

Some servers also cause the game to freeze every 5 or so seconds.

I appreciate the advice, thanks for taking time to answer. Unfortunately none of these solutions worked /: and i have a couple friends who have both worse internet connections and computers than me that seem to run the game fine. Are there maybe any settings i need to tweak or something?

I'm having a similar problem Every few seconds in game I'll get a bit of lag or fps drop... not sure which, really, it just feels like a stutter. Only happens online though. I'll try disabling my antivirus and see if that works.

Try running the game on medium settings if you run it on low all the work is done by the CPU (which is just a dual core). On medium it allows the load to go to the GPU as well.

I have a pc pretty much same specs and this is what i did.

Also what GPU you got?

Hi,

I have been experiencing a similar problem for the past couple of weeks- I was experiencing a smooth framerate which was interuppted by periods of extremely frustrating frame-drop/lag.

HERE'S WHAT THE SYMPTOMS WERE:

After trying EVERY performance tweak I could possibly find ( Startup parameters, 8GB RAMdisk, Graphics settings etc... ), I finally tracked the problem down to temperature spikes on my motherboard.

I used the temperature panel in GameBooster to watch what was going on- Initially everything would be running fine ( motherboard at ~55°C ), then I would see the temp rise to ~62°C, at which point my framerate would drop to around 5-10FPS. After around 30 seconds of this, the temperate would fall back to ~55°C and my smooth framerate would return.

HERE'S HOW I SOLVED IT:

I bought an air-duster & blasted the dust from my PC's components- after I had done this, my motherboard temperature goes no higher than 55°C - 56°C, and my frame-rate issues are completely gone.

If this works for you, please post back here and let us know. It's possible that this is the simple cause of other's problems :)

( Remember Kids- never use an airduster on live electronics, they're extremely flammable! )

EDIT- This fix has been confirmed as the source of fps issues for another forum member-

In his post Takas pointed out the need to be thorough when cleaning the dust from your PC.

I recommend buying an air-duster with a straw attachment to allow you to get to those tricky nooks in your machine.

Pay special attention to the following areas:

  • All fans.
  • Carefully remove the fan from the top of your CPU cooler, then give the heatsink a good blast.
  • Underneath the motherboard, between it and the plate it screws on to, as dust bunnies like to congregate there.
  • Motherboard heatsinks.
  • Any vents in the case.
  • The motherboard ports at the back of your case.

ADDITIONAL:

Once you have cleaned the dust from inside your PC, try running the game without replacing its case. This may help you work out if overheating is really to blame.

(My PC still runs hot when playing ARMA2/DayZ unless I remove the side of my case).

Although be aware that running your machine caseless will mean that dust build-up may occur quicker!

Again, if this solves your fps/stuttering issues, please share in order to help others :-)
