Can anyone explain the chat system to me, im really confused what group chat, direct chat etc is....

Direct chat works up to 40m I think so anyone close enough can read or hear you talking in game.

Side chat would work server wide if the server has it turned on.

Vehicle chat works with everyone in your vehicle at the time.

Actually, vehicle chat also seems to be working the same as side chat now. I've noticed more and more people using it since they've removed Sidechat on some servers.
