Whenever i use to direct chat other players can hear me, but i can't hear them.

I figured this out when i was with a group on a server with global chat. I switched to global and asked if they could hear me, they said they could, but when they switched to direct I didn't hear anything they said. Even when I switched to other servers I would talk to people in direct (yes i was very close to them) and i would get no response. Anyone know what the problem is, i'm forced to avoid all players on any server with strictly direct and group chat.
