I dont understand them, sometimes it shows you where you are others it doesnt, is it a server option or something?

Your right it's a server option

yes this seems to be a server side option. when you can see the name and range of other survivors you should be able to see your position on the map.

server that show position on maps effectively gave you free gps, plus car radar.
