I have my hatchet out, yet I'm throwing flares

I was getting attacked by a bunch of zombies, so I was trying to attack them with my hatchet, but it kept throwing flares for some reason. I'm not sure what I pressed but I'm not sure how to change it back. Any help?

You may need to 'toggle weapon'. I have mine bound to tab, not sure what it is by default but check your controls. It's how you change to throw grenades and stuff. It also lets you change from burst to semi-auto on some guns, etc.

"F" key.

Look in the top right corner and text should change every time your press it. It toggles between throwing items and (for some guns) switches between full auto/burst fire.
