zombies (alive/total)

May be a dumb question, but why are dead zombies included in this number? Why doesn't the stat just count the zombies that are alive?

Also, why do some servers have so many more zombies then others? I'm on a server that says 55/57. Is this normal? Do they only spawn where players are? There are currently 18 players on the server. There do seem to be zombies in all the towns that I visit.

When you enter a town the zombies spawn there and when you get away for a little while they despawn, so there wont be so much fps lag.
