Car gear shift system rework

Recommended Posts

first post btw
Personally I see the car mechanics in this game to be sluggish, unresponsive (as im sure most of the community might agree).

Shifting gears with just Q and E typically feels pretty fine on practically every other game with cars, but just so happens that in DayZ this action takes 2-3 business days to accomplish, god forbid your wifi sucks too.
My Idea:
Assign 7 buttons in the vehicle controls for selecting gears, pressing that key makes your character shift straight to that gear, no more guessing which gear you're going to land on after mashing Q or E!

(It's very well possible that you'd require more buttons for selecting gears if there's a car mod that adds cars with more than 5 gears after neutral and reverse)

(maybe add a setting that lets you switch between basic and advanced gear shifting?)

Example:
This whole idea is designed off of the gear shift design in most manual cars.
Structure the controls like a H shifter pattern on the keyboard:
(now bare with me, this layout absolutely stinks but im trying to get my point across and this could probably be done way better) (would also be way better on a 100% keyboard, but lots of people dont have those)
Y - 1st,
J - Neutral
B - 2nd
U -  3rd
N - 4th
I - 5th
M - Reverse

Just pressing once will change the gear exactly to the corresponding button, no more mashing Q to go into reverse after making the wrong turn.

Yeah this is more complex than regular gear shifting and im curious to hear what you guys think of this
