"Fake Online" The Truth About DayZ Server Populations: A Critical Issue

Recommended Posts

I want to draw attention to an issue that drives players away from this game: fake server populations. If Bohemia doesn’t address this, players will simply stop playing DayZ. I constantly see the community scattering to other games, and one reason for this is that they have nowhere to play.

Due to the commercial nature of maintaining servers in DayZ, entire datacenters have emerged that, first, DDoS competitors, and second, shamelessly inflate their player counts. A similar situation happened in Lineage 2, where commercial servers turned the scene into a mess, and bots created at the start of every new server launch ruined the desire to "try again."

I don’t want DayZ to turn into a private project. I want it to remain a game that is as exciting as possible. Server population is what makes this game engaging. But when a player chooses a server thinking it’s populated, only to find out the player count is fake, they feel deeply disappointed. This isn’t normal. It’s fine to join an empty server, knowing it’s empty. But the frustration of joining a server with "10021345" slots, all seemingly filled, only to run around for hours without meeting anyone, is very demoralizing.

Please, do something about this.

p.s. As of today, I don’t know a single top server without boosted player counts. The surreal part of the situation is that even on streamer-backed projects, the player counts are ridiculously inflated. Then we see their faces at events, players flock to them, buy VIP access, spend hours running around without any content, and eventually quit the game.
