Constantly Sick - Water treatment not working

I've had 3-4 characters become unplayable due to sickness here's what happened, I'm hoping someone can help explain:

Get water from a stream or pond, into glass bottles, put purification tablets in, and drink. Almost instantly I'm sick and throwing up.

I've tried to tough out the illness, tired to only use well water after getting sick, but nothing. I just end up burning all my resources to try and stay alive only to die anyway.

I suspect its an issue with the tablets not working properly or not interacting with a glass bottle properly. Any ideas would be amazing.
