Performance on PC's that are good but FPS is bad.

Recommended Posts

Please sticky as this has now helped six different people i play with and each have noticed a substantial increase in FPS but most importantly on smoothness.

The game is normally configured to use only 1500 megs of ram dedicated and it doesnt use dedicated threads.

Add these to your startup parameters in six launcher options or into your shortcuts target line after the "" mark at the end (make sure theres a space between each command plus the target exe)

-maxMem=<2047> -maxVRAM=<1024> -cpuCount=<6> -exThreads=<7> -world=empty

MaxMeM 2047 if you got 3gigs or more ram,

setting it higher will not help as its hardcoded at that level.

maxVRAM set it 100megs or so below your maximum so you dont have any trouble alt tabbing.

CPU count, how many cores you want to utilize (virtual cores included, ex: intel hyper threads)

exThreads the way extra threads for different tasks are supplied: 3 or 5 for dual cores, 7 for quad and higher core numbers.

worldempty will simply help with the initial loading time of the game.

Hopefully this will allow you to enjoy the game more, personally i got a whopping 40% performance increase on a modern med-high end PC. I cant guarantee that you'll enjoy as high an increase but it will definitely help to some degree.

Thats indeed strange as i got a Zotac GTX560 Ti 448 myself and it isnt all that different, mind if i ask your specs?

Just a little input my 5870s CF run at around 30% usage on both cards, cpu is 27% i7 870 4Ghz and my ram at around 30% 8gb, will test this out and post my results.

Can you tell me how to get to the startup parameters for six launcher please :)

1. Some servers are bad and give you low fps

2. Be careful when trying out different video settings, a lower setting might actually mean "don't use gpu, instead use cpu"

None of these tweaks are necessary anymore. All these issues have been resolved in the latest patches/beta patches.

If folks see any difference I reckon it's just a placebo :)

The only launch option to add to see a performance increase is -winxp

This will change renderer form dx9ex to dx9

This will improve performance slightly, especially for sli users as it will allow use of second card.

I tried adding the startup parameters, and noticed a big difference. Tried several different servers and the FPS was much better (allmost 50% up)

I'm using Six Launcher.

Are you using an AMD chip by any chance?

I'd imagine you are due to the tweak -cpuCount=<6>

If so I'd say remove all the other startup parameters you listed except -cpuCount=<6> and see if your performance increase remains. If so I reckon that the arma engine just has issues detecting hexcores, as the other tweaks should not do anything as they have all been fixed in patches.

If this is the case the only folks that will see any benefit from this wil be AMD users.

Interested to see if this is the case, let me know.

AMD Phenom II X9 @3.2GHz

8GB DDR3

SSD

Nvidia GTX 570 (not m)

I tried every single video setting from very low to very high without success, always 8-15FPS.

Arma II without DayZ works like a charme at very high.

What helps is, when i set everytime the CPU Priority for arma2oa.exe in Task Manager to "Realtime", then i get 25FPS but this cant be a solution.

Very interesting. The performance was just as good when i removed all the other startup parameters except -cpuCount=<6>

This is information alot of users should know about. Any way to share this properly?

And my graphic card uses AMD chip. Its an ATI Radeon HD5700 series.

Yea thought as much. I have never seen any difference with these tweaks but I run an Intel quad chip so that would explain it.

Do you use..

-cpuCount=<6>

or

-cpuCount=6

Also are you using -winxp tweak?

I'm using Six Launcher so all the startup parameters are boxes and no manual commands.

I'm not using -winxp tweak.

You mean six updater? six launcher doesn't have boxes.

I use six launcher because I think it's a more streamlined interface.

You can go to {options - additional startup parameters) and enter..

-winxp -cpuCount=6

and that will do the same.

I find -winxp helps a lot, but your mileage may vary.

Let me know how you get on.

Adjust Advanced Video options specific to your card...

*** Video Memory = Default

*** Shadow Detail = High or Very High (This will make the video card process shadows not the cpu... Put them off at Night and boost Gamma)

*** Interface Resolution and 3D Resolution should be the same setting (your displays native resolution)

file: "My Documents" \\ Arma 2 \\ ArmA2OA.cfg

AToC=6;

PPAA=2;

PPAA_Level=2;

(With the above setting you can dissable ingame AA, if you have a powerfull video card increase the PPAA_Level)

file: "My Documents" \\ Arma 2 Other Profiles \\ "Your Name" \\ Your%20Name.ArmA2OAProfile

mouseSmoothing=1;

SceneComplexity=320000;

(Soundblaster X-FI - So I add the following to my *.ArmA20AProfile

No more problem with audio stutter - fixes the flys! and the lag audio can cause.)

soundEnableEAX=0;

soundEnableHW=1;

AMD 1055T at very slight OC, tried just with CPU count and i retained some of my FPS advantage but definitely not all of it. (Same scene 60FPS with all options was around 50-55 with CPU count and no parameters was around 40, scene used: overlooking electro with buildings rendered, both zoomed and unzoomed performance identical with parameters, unzoomed awful without them)

Did several tests and it most certainly isnt placebo on most of my friends configurations.

To use startup parameters in SIX Launcher push the tiny options button in the lower left corner and the insert them into the additional startup parameters.

DEXER: Try disabling C1E and HT(hyper threading) in your BIOS setting if youre comfortable changing them, refer to motherboard manual if you dont know what youre doing before you commit changes.

Should be no need to disable HT as cores are correctly detected now.

The scene you tested, was it in arma2OA or day-z?

If it was day-z then you had to log out and restart to change launch options, so there could have been other players in the area when you tried the test again(and more zombies spawned for the new players), which would account for the fps hit you mentioned.

Best way to test it is to load up the single player scenario "counterattack", disembark the APC, take shelter behind one of the buildings and look towards the center of Cherno.

Then do a few laps of the house and note the minimum fps.

Then suspend, change settings and load back in and repeat a few laps of the house.

If you can maintain a playable fps on this you should be good to go for day-z, as this is the best real world benchmark you can do to configure your settings.

I tested in multiple scenarios, mostly in cherno area though due to the high amount of objects. Restarts between every setting change etc.

Ever since i started using the optional settings my FPS has never dropped below 50.

Didn't help even as much as to increase my FPS by 1. And like most other people, I could run Arma 2 on max settings no problem, as well as other games. Yet I steady at 10-15 FPS on every single server I've tried.

And I've tried other methods of tweaking, too.
