No you cannot use a pirated copy, because the game required a legitimate CD KEY/GUID to connect to the server.

What are you talking about Casdin ArmA 2 is Free... They released a free version that doesn't have everything the full one does but has the basics...Did you ever wonder if he downloaded that? Idk I'm just saying.

You can't play with a pirated ARMA 2, you need ARMA 2 free (http://www.arma2.com/free/) and a PURCHASED copy of Operation Arrowhead, (http://store.steampowered.com/app/33930/) the cheapest option is the one you want.

Combined Ops is just ARMA 2 and OA in one package, it costs more and you don't NEED it to play DayZ, you'll just have crappy textures. Personally I'd buy Combined Ops just to support BIS. But it ISN'T required.

Some people say that using Arma II Free + Arma II: Operation Arrowhead lets you play the mod but with shittier graphics and bad performance (or at least not as good as with Combined Operations)

Have not tried this myself, but that is what I have read. Hope it helps.

P.S. You are getting the Bad key message precisely because you can't play with pirated copies of the game.

It's a shame you can't find ArmA 2: Combined Operations in the CD package format as easily anymore. Screw steam. So much easier with the CD versions
