Sort Ammunition Action - Improve condition by lowering yield

Recommended Posts

I think it could be worthwhile considering a way to improve the condition of found stackable items such as ammunition by "sorting out" the worst/most damaged of the bunch and discarding them, improving the condition of the stack as a whole while discarding an portion of the stack as trade off.

My initial thoughts were to implement it as an action option when ammunition or other stackable items is held in the hand, having the character do a basic animation (such as the crafting animation) and the stack be replaced by one of 1 level higher(better) condition with a lower number of units in the stack. Maybe keeping 40-80% of the initial stack value depending on balancing, difficulty and possibly a degree of random variation.

For example:
Using this action when holding a stack of 25 Badly Damaged 9x19mm Rounds could for instance grant the player a stack of 18 Damaged 9x19mm Rounds.
Using the action again when holding the same stack could perhaps yield the player a stack of 8 Worn 9x19mm Rounds and so on. Perhaps with diminishing returns on repeated actions (by holding action key through several cycles or repeating the action on the same stack) or a lower yield between given levels of condition such as between Badly Damaged and Damaged.

The concept of improving condition grade by sacrificing total yield is the main suggestion here. How it should be implemented, be it by using an action while holding the items or by other means is not really the point.

I have no idea how this would impact the balance of the game and what parameters and percentages should be used but I think the concept is interesting and could possibly be a tiny but positive addition to the overall experience of the game. Allowing fresh spawns to simply "make do" with low grade, low condition items - while giving players the option to accumulate high grade, high condition gear by filtering out low condition items in stacks over time.

That's all, thanks for reading.
