DayZ Console Inventory Rework Suggestion

Recommended Posts

Hello! Thanks for taking the time to read my post. The inventory on console is a little rough, particularly when trying to use large containers that are full (like a full M3S, for instance). I thought that maybe there could be an option in the settings to toggle between two different inventory systems depending on the player's preference. I know there already two different control schemes, and that the different control schemes do affect the inventory key binds, but I was thinking of a separate system that is more flexible and consistent than the current implementation. It does not simply make new key binds for the current inventory system, but instead gives it a little rework.

The Rework:

So, the idea is that instead of having selector box for each item, which is the current system, a cursor controlled by the analog stick would be able select items. This would be similar to a mouse, but the cursor would be controlled by the right or left stick, for instance. The other stick could be used to scroll the inventory screens up and down, if necessary. The right and left bumper could be used to rotate items, and the right trigger could be used to grab items. The left trigger could be used to change the cursor speed, like to slow it down for more control for instance. The other buttons and the d-pad could be used for interactions, like to "X" to combine items or "A" to move an item to your hands. Using these extra buttons are not necessary, though, as a similar implementation to PC could be used, where you can drag item to the hands slot and drop it on the combine option, for instance. The new system could also have options in the settings to change the cursor sensitivity (both in standard and in slow mode). This system essentially imitates the current PC inventory system. Though if this is going to be a toggleable option, the original and this new system would probably need to work in a similar fashion, so no grid or rotation of items is necessary. So there are essentially two routes to go with this system: (1) port the PC inventory system to console, but use the controller to control the cursor, or (2) make a PC and console inventory hybrid, using the console-style inventory with a cursor similar to PC. You could even make it possible to switch between the two systems in the inventory itself, making it possible to use the original for quick transfers, but use this new system for more complicated item management.

My main complaint with the current console inventory is that it's just difficult to work with and inconsistent (although it actually does work fairly well on a smaller inventory). I thought that even though this new system might be slower, it would be far more consistent. You would not need to fight with the selector box in order to grab the right item or go to the correct inventory. Once again, thank you for taking the time to read my post. I'm not sure if this would be feasible or if it would be worth devoting resources to this, but I think this might help fix some of the issues that the current console inventory system has. Thanks!
