Broken Legs (again)

Recommended Posts

Broken legs and morphine seem to have been discussed a fair bit in the past, so I apologize in advance for dragging it up again - the threads I found in my search had fairly contrived suggestions for 'fixing' the broken legs issue so I figured I'd throw my 2c in a fresh one. Oh, and yes, I am aware broken bones from infected is being nerfed in the upcoming patch, I'm not posting to whine about broken bones ruining my game or anything.

So anyway, I really like the medical system in the game so far, but I must admit that my first impression of the current 'morphine fixes your bones' situation was that it was... Well, ludicrous. I'm a healthcare professional, and have had the unfortunate experience of breaking my leg way out in the woods for real. It does make sense that morphine is going to make things more bearable, but there's devastating functional impairment that accompanies even the smallest fracture of a long bone that no amount of pain relief is going to fix.

The idea of splints being fashioned with some new 'rags' item, or bandages, plus firewood, as an alternative to morphine, with or without some kind of even-more-unrealistic/arbitrary 'one hour to heal' system has been thrown around, but if you've ever had a broken limb splinted with no pain relief, you know it's definitely not a solution to all of your problems, and breaks don't heal in any amount of time not measured in days or weeks.

In game, my experiences with broken bones have been, what struck me as a way too quick fix with morphine, or an agonizingly tiresome ordeal crawling around looking for some before giving in and respawning. I also discovered it is very difficult to crawl out of some buildings, and impossible to crawl up stairs, leading to lots of situations where you are hopelessly stuck.

~

I'm in danger of making this post too long to read, so I'll outline my actual ideas as briefly as I can:

-Keep the crawling when you have an entirely untreated broken leg element, it rings true

-Do away with morphine as the solution to all your broken leg woes

-Introduce splinting/supporting a broken limb using bandages alone (to keep it simple, because compression is better than nothing, and because a splint is surprisingly easy to find lying around in the real world)

-Enable players with a splinted leg to walk but not run upright, never crouched (you can't crouch with a broken leg, ow!), to facilitate exiting tight buildings, using stairs and moving at a slightly less agonizingly slow pace to give you more of a chance of rectifying the situation - maybe the icon for a splinted break should change to look less 'snapped'

-Make morphine plus a splint restore full mobility, because fuck 'healing' a broken bone - that takes weeks IRL, realism is a relative term and I find the idea of a splint plus pain relief restoring functional capacity far more plausible than either of those things alone, or healing a break in an hour, seriously wtf at that one!

Cheers for reading if you got this far!

On a somewhat-related note, I think it'd be fun to see different kinds of breaks, lower limb breaks that behave as broken bones do currently, maybe upper limb breaks that force you to use only a sidearm until splinted, which limits how high you can aim your primary weapon until you find morphine. Cracked ribs that behave like a splinted lower limb break without treatment and only require morphine?

I dunno, I'm a bit of a sadistic fuck and would enjoy seeing the results of the tactical re-think required to deal with untreated or partially treated breaks of different varieties. :P

Let me know what you think! Hopefully someone in a position to implement something I've mentioned reads this before it's buried in PVP solutions!

I am not a fan of the broken leg system either, but really love the fact they are trying something like this. Something like this makes the game really interesting, but lets be honest no matter what (broken leg, torn ACL ect) it won't be realistic and I am ok with that. Different injuries would be cool, popped shoulder, broken ribs, broken arm, leg, nose ect. I am a fan of it healing over time, not instantly. So you use your morphine and splint and it speeds up that time, instead of bam healed.

Either way they do it I want it to stay in the game, it is unique. Just hope it gets a little better. Falling from a tree stand should rarely break my leg, maybe I twist an ankle or something.
