How far up/down does the gas extend?

I've heard a lot of different numbers for both gas extending upwards and gas extending underneath the ground. 

Does anyone know the actual numbers? I know that, for example, the top of the hospital in Pavlovo is a safe zone. That's 4 floors right?

it depends on a server - these numbers can be altered
