Noob question, please help

Whenever I am wielding a hatchet and I pick up road flares or chems, why when I press the shoot button does it throw the flares instead of meleeing with the hatchet? this has killed me many times i dont know whats happeneing :\ Please help?

hit f to cycle through your options for primary fire button, will display what it's bound to in the upper right. should say something like hatchet up there. at the moment you have to reload the hatchet before you use it.
