Vehicle retexturing

I'm new to all of this, but the #1 thing I've wanted to do was make some retextures of vehicles. I would like to do it with the vanilla cars, but I don't know how to do it. I can do clothing just fine but would anyone be willing to walk me through this, and how to go about doing it properly with permissions or whatever please?
