Can't see other player

My friend and I are both new to DayZ, and after a very long time of trying to find each other, we ended up at the same location - the little building right off the train tracks at Komarovo.

If we hadn't been in a voice chat we'd have had no idea that one another was there though, as we cannot physical see each other's character. We can both see the exact same items on the ground, and when he picks something up it disappears or vice-versa, but we still cannot actually see each other.

Does anybody know what the problem is and how this could be fixed?

We ARE on the same server, just to be clear.

Thank you. That may be the problem. Earlier I saw a player driving a bus, and when he got out to get gas I went right up to him and tried to converse without any acknowledgement that I was even right there.
