whitelist and password-protected servers

Recommended Posts

I am a bit curious at this. Why are there servers running DayZ, which are password protected?

I've been seeing servers crop up as of late, that either have less than 30 (talking about 20 slot or even 10 slot servers), with password-protection on them. In a few cases I've had my friends play on a server, to find a vehicle, and try to repair it, only to come across the admins who had their eye on the same vehicle. Rather than fight it out, the admins kicked my friends, and locked the server. (this was about 2-3 weeks back)

I see the servers actually follow the same structure of naming as official ones as well, which leaves me to believe they are violating the rules of server-hosting.

Now, is there some sort of exception that these servers are on, that allows them to do such? As I see it, it gives an unfair advantage to anyone who will later join the server, or if the players would go to another server with gear farmed this way.

Examples of locked servers at this post:

US 300 with no-one on, 20 slots, locked.

US 234 Seattle, with 3 people on, 50 slots, locked.

AT #1, no-one on, locked.

US 175, 10 slots, no-one on, locked.

US 168, 40 slot, no-one on, locked

US 142, 40 slot, no-one, locked

US 220, 4 players on, 40 slot, locked.

These are just some examples. I would just like this clarified, is there something in the rules that allows this? Because, boy, if it is true, our little group of friends would rent our own server right away, to play just by ourselves.

Do a search man, like a zillion topics concerning this issue.

DEV`s are watching the lists, i even read they will start blacklisting server very soon.

BTW, they`re probably all breaking the rules..so DEVs will take actions i assume..

Locked Servers are not allowed because individuals can just farm for loot without anyone killing them, then hop onto any other server with the best gear and wreck your world.

A good post to go by was a post in this thread, Ill copy it here. Was from one of the Day-Z Engineering Manager

I understand that PvE only is something people want, but right now it's just not available in DayZ, It actually hurts the community as a whole when admins try to enforce PvE only, since players can go on your PvE server to farm gear to use elseware without the worry of getting killed by players. I mean come on.. Lets face it, a group of 10 players would have a pretty easy time against most zombie mobs. If there are no players in that mix to disrupt that balance, it's super easy to sit at stary and northwest all day getting bomb ass weapons, then taking them to "normal" servers to dominate with. I would personally like to see PvE only at some point as well, but right now it's not a priority on our list. It would take a large infrastructural change which we're not prepared to take, especially while the game is still in the Alpha stage, in order to provide a PvE only experience that doesn't effect the rest of the non DayZ PvE Servers."

I'm an admin of US 234. It's locked because we're still trying to figure out why the hell crosshairs won't go away.

Also, I'm testing tent stability. So far 2/3 times we've lost tents. I'd rather us admins lose our shit to buggy tents than open the server to people and have them lose their stuff.

There`s nothing to test, stuff disappears, everybody knows that.

I didnt see any any topics from the DEV`s informing us they fixed stuff related to items in tents / cars..

So what`s there to test?

I own servers and i dont see any reason to "test" anything..

Smells like BS imo.

I might be wrong ofcourse..

@ Milky - Sometimes server options don't work when you tell them too, thats a normal bug also, however I have never locked any server when changing options because if the server goes up and down a few times in ten minutes, someone will notice. Or I simply inform them through battleeye "Hey, Server is going down, tents didn't save properly.' and its all good.

I never got the point of locking a server either, it causes too many problems and isn't permitted anyway. I just avoid the confusion and see no purpose in 'locking a server to test something'

That is my input on it.

No offense intented btw Ravin,

And yes, when tents / cars don`t respawn properly, i reboot the server in question (after dropping an admin rcon message informing the players).

I just know some admins use this excuse to lock there servers for hours, re-openen it and do this for days..and call it testing..

oo well, the ban-hammer is coming, arm yourselfs! :)

Of course, None taken. Just expressing a viewpoint and dropping off some information that hopefully someone will find useful.

I'm the admin of US300 - there shouldn't be any other "US 300". The server has always been 100 slot and was never locked at any point.
