Adjust overall chance of loot spawning?

I understand how to edit the types.xml to adjust the chances for individual items to spawn, but what do I have to do to adjust the chances for loot to spawn overall, or at least based on the type of loot or building? I am going for less loot and I've reduced the chances for a lot of items to spawn in types.xml, but I'm afraid that will lead to extra spawns of other loot that I didn't adjust.
