Captain Q

Hello everyone. I'm a new player, and I'm looking for tips?

Recommended Posts

First, I'd like to say I'm a little seasoned in ArmA 2, by no means that great. I never played multiplayer, but I could take on the campaign and single player missions with maximum difficulty, only having trouble when I was limited to a helicopter (I can take off, fly in circles, and land well, that's about it).

I have read that there are cheaters on the servers, who are punished and removed in all, but they sometimes leave decent gear sitting around. For example, if I walk upon a tank or a thermal-sighted rifle that have been hacked in by another player, and I decide to use it for myself and happen to be proficient with them, that too would make me a "hacker" despite finding the weapons legitimately, would it not? Would I be banned for simply touching the gear?

It has come to my attention that people will be banned for player killing in some servers by hosts at some times.

As a 'lone wolf' type of fellow without audio communication and poor networking skills, I would probably be one of the bandits if I came across a camp with an MG sitting out in the open and players non-willing to share with someone they don't know, or in the case of the games more important aspects, bottled water.

Sure, I'd try diplomacy first "can I has wuter please?" but I'm pretty sure I'd be shot, and by that trial/error mistake replaying, I'd be led to believe that everyone is a bad guy, and shoot first ask for things later. My question is, however, is it legal? Or would people just think "That guy's a prick" when I come out of nowhere with a little makarov and hit them one or two times? Again, I would by all means try diplomacy first unless I ended up dying over and over again because of it.

I'm very much aware that this isn't call of duty or BF3, so being one man would be hard. I'd be very much like a scavenger wolf who follows the main pack. I know the basics of ArmA, but when it comes to multiplayer, I'm clueless.

Also, what about when I don't want to play anymore? How do I quit and/or save my progress? I can't stay on the computer 24/7 to keep a lucky AK or something in my inventory.

Please give me some hinters?

First of all. Id say go straight for for the balota airbase , try and get a weapon. If that fails go to cherno and loot the 2 floor houses. After you have a weapon try going to a military base and get some good guns and after that try going up north to the NW Airbase and get military gear. Then your set. PS. Dont be afraid to take the first shot when you see a survivor. You life can depend on a simple desicion. Which is Shoot or most likely die.

Thank you for your advice, this is great! :)

I'm just wondering, though, is there some way to use the chat function to talk to a survivor that I see while I'm still hiding in the bushes a safe distance away from them? If not, then I'll go ahead and take them out before they can pose a danger.

Welcome to DayZ.

Have a browse through some of the threads for a while with a cup of coffee and you will discover a mine of useful information.

1) Things will go wrong in the game, bugs and glitches and obviously getting killed by players and infected....do not worry about it, it happens on a regular basis.

2) Treat every play through as a training experience for later on, as you play you start to see landmarks and relate to where you are without a map. Almost like orienteering .

3) Infected, can be hard to see or even hidden...your hearing is very important in this game, you can detect distance, direction and intention of those around you by it....especially at night.Turn off your game music.

4) Learn to travel the map like a soldier or a hunter would. Weigh up the route from your location to your destination and see if there is an approach that keeps you hidden from view. Avoid crossing open ground if at possible, follow treelines from several metres inside the woodland.

5) Lights are a double edged weapon, sometimes you will absolutely have to use a light source to see with......but everyone may well see you. Do not just play on daylight servers, as night time is a massive part of the game.

6) Sound, always move as stealthy as you can.....keep running reserved for deep woodland or when you are in the shit with nothing to lose. Sound attracts the living as well as the not quite living.

If you decide to loot Cherno or Elektro first, that's your call. For a guy like me, when I try to loot, I usually run into a bandit or get noticed by a zombie.

If something doesn't work the first time, try a new strategy. I had died probably 10 times by being an idiot and trying to hack my way through cherno with a hatchet. It will not ever work like that, and you'll attract to many zombies for your liking.

What I did was just run inland. I had no weapon, not even a hatchet. The first thing I see inland is a red-roof barns, which is a sight for sore eyes. They usually contain a nice little shotgun (either a double-barrel or a winchester) and there should be some ammo that comes with it. Also, Lee Enfields spawn plenty of times in a barn, but watch out, they're extremely loud. If you fire a shot in Cherno or Elektro with that thing, you're going to be swarmed by zombies all over the city.

As I looted the barn, I found ammo, bandages, painkillers, and a wonderful starting gun, the Winchester 1886 (with 2 mags). I began my journey inland like a pro. I stayed in the treeline, I looted deerstands, and as others have said, I planned my route. Always observe before you go loot a city, because half the time there won't be a single open building in the entire town. Once you learn the building models, you'll recognize a building that can be open a klick away.

As I was looting the deerstands with my Winchester, I was desperately looking for a better gun against players (because after the Makarov, most guns are a 1 shot kill on zombies, and the more gear you get, the more paranoid you become), and to my surprise I find a freakin' AKS with 2 30 rounds mags and a Kobra scope.

One last tip: Don't ignore tin cans. They can lure zombies out of important buildings and you can walk right in unseen.

Patience is key in this game, and no matter what, you WILL die. Never get too attached to your equipment.

Well, practically everyone I've met have been shooting at me.. even though I've never instigated a fire fight.

Don't get me wrong, I love it, even though I die, a lot... However, I can't but wonder where those famed friendlies are at :P
