Can you use ARMA 2 free to play DayZ?

I've heard about 50% of the time that it's not possible, but sometimes I hear that it is. Can anyone confirm that it's possible, as I may buy Arma 2 OA for a friend, but I cannot afford Arma 2.

It says on the ARMA 2 Free website: 'minus the campaign, HD graphics and support for user-made addons and mods.'

Also, if it's possible, do you just use the demo version of Arma 2 on Steam for the free version?
