Crafting and skinning issues

Hey people, 

Not sure if it is posted else where and either I'm being a n00b or it's broken but, crafting seems not to working in particular crafting a bow. Doesn't seem to work for me and my mates. Also we have been killing chickens, cows etc and when skinning them not getting feathers, hide etc. We are using all different types of knives. Are we doing it wrong?  Also can't seem to use weapon repair/cleaning kits
