Game freezes, then horrible FPS

Recommended Posts

At random times during play, the game will freeze, but usually goes back to normal after ten or so seconds. However, every now and then, the game will freeze for a long period of time (40+ seconds), and when the game finally unfreezes, the game will be capped at 1.5 FPS, and I get minor graphical glitches like swapping LODs, incorrect textures on entities, and super low-res textures. I don't know what's exactly causing this, but I'd like a little help.

Specs:

Windows 7 32-bit

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ @2.3ghz

2GB DDR2800 RAM

Nvidia GeForce GT 440 2GB DDR3 RAM (Overclocked from 810mhz core to 900mhz, 667mhz memory to 800mhz), latest drivers.

ArmA II settings:

Everything at very low/off, 800x600 3D res, 1024x768 interface res.

I have experienced these stutters aswell, they clear for me after a few seconds.

Some basic video settings suggestions. Turn post processing effects off, its just annoying. Make your 3d resolution the same as your monitor resolution, people say it actually eats more fps then when on a lower setting.

Set your video memory to DEFAULT, it uses all your available memory this way. Turning v sync off is a matter of debate, some say it really works in DayZ for upping fps, others say it doesnt. On low end machines i'd say turn it on.

Next patch will have some major fps fixes for DayZ, if you still have issues after playing around with the video settings then just wait a bit for the patch.

Is your card overheating?

Also, try flushing your video memory in-game (Hold LEFT-SHIT and press NUM MINUS (minus key on the numberpad. Type in "Flush" and hit enter. Note: Nothing will appear as you do this, however if done successfully, your vram will be flushed (Screen will go black briefly).

Side note; Make sure Video Memory is set to Very High.

Forgot to mention that I have memory usage set to default, and I already said that all graphics settings are set to very low. I also seriously doubt that increasing my resolution from 800x600 to 1280x1024 will increase performance, but I'll give it a try.

Card isn't overheating. Even when overclocked, temperatures hang around 40-50c. And thanks for the tip.

To be honest, I have a feeling that the freezing isn't a graphics issue, and that the messed up graphics are just a side effect of the constant 1.5 FPS.

Is the game maxing out your CPU and GPU? I would think your computer could handle Arma without much issue. You've updated your drivers, correct?

Wait for the next patch then mate, can't think of anything else. In an extreme experiment try installing your card in someone elses pc and do a play session.

Also you say you overclocked it, try setting it to normal and then playing. Who knows...

This is also a good idea to try.

Don't put your settings on "Extra Low" or "Low," as this causes the game to use CPU rather than GPU. Put the settings on "Normal" for best results. Chances are that you may even be able to set the graphics at Very High and see no difference--you might as well have the better quality.

Keep switching servers is the main fix. Try Arma 2 singleplayer. If that works fine, then you know it's the DayZ mod/server optimization that's causing problems.

I don't know about GPU, I'll have to look at that. I do know that my CPU and RAM maxes out, and I have to close as many things as possible in order to free up enough resources for Arma. I do know that during gameplay, my CPU begins to bottleneck. When I first join a server, I can get upwards of 35FPS, 45-60 looking at the ground. During play, my FPS will degrade until it's in the mid 20's, mid 10's, and looking at the ground will give me an increase of maybe 3 FPS.

Good to know. I'll try it out.
