Axes and guns?

First off let me say I'm getting better at the game after my first log in yesterday and muddling through the controls, key commands and general survival techniques.

One thing I noticed today was that after picking up a hatchet and learning to use it effectively against zed's, I came across an automatic weapon(rifle-no ammo), but after picking it up, I couldn't equip my hatchet when I needed to without dropping the rifle.

Am I missing something about the gear bags as I haven't figured out what slots are for what gear etc?

Surely I don't have to drop my close encounter weapon to pick up, use and keep a ranged weapon?

So far the mod rocks-keep up the good work devs..:)

You must put the axe in your toolbelt. You can just right-click on the axe and choose "Put on toolbelt". This removes your axe as a melee weapon and moves it to the toolbelt (can still use it to chop wood), now you can pick up the weapon on the ground.

Right click the axe and put it into the toolbelt, if you need it as a weapon again then you will need to drop the gun and equip the axe once more!

I edited my thread as I realized that I actually could pick up the rifle, but then I couldn't equip my hatchet as it said there was not room to use it...

Pick up the axe, put it in the toolbelt, then pick up the weapon. Now you have both, but you can't use the axe as a melee weapon if you have another primary weapon.

What I don't understand is that i cannot have the hatchet/axe as a secondary weapon. What i am running into when I'm first starting off after death is that once i get a gun, i try and keep it for as long as possible but if it low on ammo, i cant just simply quick switch to the hatchet.

I hope they have some changes in the works for this because even keeping the "hyper realism" game play true, I'm sure i can drop a gun and switch to an axe on my belt to hit a zombie in real life.

I would suggest that people should be able to use the hatchet the same way than flares from the inventory but from the toolbelt.
