A few ideas and a few complaints.

Recommended Posts

Being a big zombie apocalypse fan, I am absolutely loving this game. I am spending way to much time playing it! That being said I do have a few complaints and ideas but I understand that this is a beta for the mod and I am sure if these ideas haven't already been discussed then they have probably been thought of before. I also realize that the mod is severely limited by the game it is built around as well.

1. Water. If I can refill a canteen at a pond or lake, I should be able to drink directly from the pond or lake.

2. Zombie movement is a bit ubsurd. The fact that they run is fine but the animation is just nutty. This goes for the attack animation as well. Just too fast. I think a smoother animation is needed for both attacking and running to make it a bit more realistic and less like the zombies are having seizures while running.

3. Zombies climbing ladders and doors. I heard it was recently changed to allow zombies to do both. Why is this? Both actions are what would be considered as "high level functions" which a zombie shouldn't have. A zombies function should be simple..."braiiiins! nom nom nom..." and that's it. Opening doors and climbing ladders should be beyond a zombies ability to understand.

4. Stacking items. I think some items should be stackable. Cans of food and whatnot probably not but the one thing that really comes to mind are crossbow bolts. 1 bolt per slot? Ouch. Let them be stackable in 20 or so and perhaps also make them retrievable. If fired into a zombie I should be able to get it back and use it again. If fired into a wall then perhaps it should be lost forever. This would make it rewardable to hit my target properly and not miss.

5. Finally, and this is something that just kind of upset me while playing and is likely more an issue with ArmA than the mod, not sure if it can be fixed. Zombies attacking through walls and doors. Windows I get...maybe not intended but it works. When a door is closed, a zombie should not be able to attack through it. Bang on the door perhaps but not clip through and deal damage to the player on the other side. Perhaps if a zombie cant open the door but can attack it and make lots of noise that attracts other zombies (this would make hiding inside a room less tempting). I was in a small building with two doors on either side with zombies around me. The doors were closed but they were clipping through hitting me on both sides and there was nothing I could do about it. Frustrating! I also had broken legs and even though I had a gun I couldn't seem to kill a zombie with it while prone after I opened a door.

Overall I am liking the direction of the game. I am sure my complaints are minor but I hope they have some merit and will be considered. I admit I have not spent a lot of time looking through the threads here but I am about to do so. Enjoy!

#1: I believe the devs are already planning to implement this.

#2: It's a miracle that the zombie AI works as well as it does given that the AI programming didn't exist in the core game (Arma 2). That said, the devs are also working on this (a lot).

#3: Different fictions, different rules. Vampires aren't supposed to glitter in the sunlight, either, yet somehow we're still stuck with the Twilight Series. That said, this game follows the Left 4 Dead school of thought that a player shouldn't be able to hole-up in a place where zombies can't reach. So while stairs and ladders will slow a zombie down, it won't stop them. As for doors, zombies walk through them because eventually they're going to be able to just smash through the doors; refer back to #2. ;)

#4: A common gripe, but remember that you can retrieve bolts from corpses (and even from missed shots if you can find where it went). So really you don't need more bolts than you would carry stacks of ammo, anyway. Also, bolts really aren't that uncommon, so even if you lose a bolt or two, you won't go long before you can replace it.

#5: Probably another refer to #2 thing, but I don't really know the story on why they can attack through walls.

I agree with stacking arrows, maybe up to 5. Not 20, that's just to much. I don't think food should stack, I like the idea of you only have so much space in your bag.

As for what zombies should and should not be able to do. I don't understand where you get this idea of what zombies should be limited to. Let me remind you zombies are not real, every novel / movie / game has their own interpretation of what zombies do and how they act. In the movie I am Legend, the zombies started to learn. In Resident Evil the zombies where dumb as f*ck.

I like the fact that the zombies can open / close doors and the fact that they can climb. Adds a little more challenge to the game. And that's always good.

Wait...so you CAN retrieve arrows? I swear I have tried and tried and just never can. I have shot so many zombies just to test this and the zombie while having the arrow sticking out of his body, does not have it in its inventory and the arrow itself has no option to grab it out of the corpse. Ive shot a few into wooden walls and the ground to test that as well with no success. Can see the arrow clearly but can't pick it up.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Is it possibly a server side change effecting this?

Ill concede the zombies climbing ladders and opening doors...but if they can do that then I should be able to punch em in the face and defend myself to some degree. Not sure how the devs can pull that one off but it would be nice.

WhiteTigerShiro pretty much wrapped it up with the same things I was going to say and for #5, the Devs have acknowledged the issue and are working to fix it, in fact, they have already started, not long a go they could walk through walls too and that has been fixed.

Be patient, subscribe to the dev team on twitter and you'll realize a lot of what you think needs fixing/changing already is being fixed/changed! :D That's the great thing about the DayZ dev team (:

It doesn't go into the zombie's inventory; honestly not sure if it goes into a player's inventory or not. Anyway, depending on where you hit the zombie and how he falls, it can be tricky to find the arrow. From there you basically need to center it properly so you can get the "Loot Arrow" option. So can be tricky, but you can retrieve them.

perhaps a crossbow quiver in the toolbelt?

That when added it allows 3 bolts per slot rather then 1?

Ill mess around with it some more the next time I get a crossbow then.

Perhaps something that would be useful to those of us that really like that crossbow would be a quiver. Replaces the backpack and has whatever amount of slots for each arrow and the crossbow can be reloaded directly from the quiver unlike the backpack.
