How about adding a in game friends list so you can see where you friends are and what server,

Also private chat and be able to group up so you can tell the difference between friend and foe and be able to type to each other without others knowing you are there

I'm guessing this is one of those "limitations of the base game" problems.

I would have to agree. I think its just an Arma II limitation, hopefully its thought through a little more with Arma III.
