I got a train to catch!

Recommended Posts

I heard generators were mentioned, if topped up with fuel to power items like street lights, house lights, etc.

How about a train is powered by the generator too which runs around the rail track and stops at various stations which you can catch a ride on to another station.

I'm not sure if the engine could support this.

If it could, the train would be limited in areas it can travel to, as well as extreme amount of items needed to resupply and repair it. And based on the tracks, I'd imagine a train on this map would be steam or coal driven, not so much magnetic. (in the simplist terms, of course)

OK maybe it just requires lots of wood piles to make it run for a 24hrs till it needs more wood.

It wont be a train that needs repair or one you drive. It runs by itself and anyone can hitch a ride on.

Not the worst idea, for sure. It would definitely be something to encourage team play, since repair and maintenance of the train would be near impossible solo, especially when you consider that there's a lot of points where you'd have to get out and re-align the rails depending on where you want to get to. And all the noise that a train would make would be a deterrent from being too reliant on it as a means of transit. So I say go for it.

i see the validness in your idea but whats stopping 1 bigass group of bandits just keeping it running 24/7 and killing those who are investigating the noise or whats stopping some snipers camping a stopped train and killing those who investigate.

if there was a sytem of psi where the train/locomotive looses pressure depending on damage that might work so say someone parks thier car on rails the train collides with car, car goes boom, train stops from lack of steam pressure, train needs 20 rolls of ductape, 5 steel ingots, welding tool/helmet and toolbox to fix or somthing so it works but is a bastard to repair if damaged.

Just an FYI - The trains would run on diesel, so a shit ton of jerry cans.

I have read a Huey takes 50 jerry cans to fill its 206gal fuel tank. Extrapolating that out to the 5,000 gal capacity of most modern locomotives. You would be looking at around 1200 jerry cans to fill it up.

i dont think they would run on diesel remember this isnt a modern country its a post soviet russian (chenarus is Black Russia in russian i think) area and i think it would run on wood(i know they run on coal but its a bastard to mine). idk but i think if not steam powered then 2 trains a per-server and 1 deisel and 1 steam.

deisel runs for longer but fuel is a pain in the ass unless your lucky enough to stop at a station with fuel acess to train and steam runs for less time on the fuel it has but fuel is in abundance.

plus 2 trains would make funny collisions LOL

The vast majority of steam locomotives were replaced by 1960 in the USSR, while some still were in service at industries and private owners- it is accepted that by 1985 all had ceased operation.

And don't forget, if you wanted to go the steam route it would take around 7,000 gal of water just to prep the locomotive and around 10 tons of coal (or wood in your suggestion)

Same thing that stops a group of bandits from using the vehicles that are already in-game as a way to kill people who investigate the noise, or stopping a sniper from camping a stopped car and killing anyone who gets close to it.

Abso-fucking-lutely nothing. So what's your point?

good point but deisel would be more powerful and fast but because of that zeds and other bandits would not be able to attack the train and therefore aslong as they have fuel they have immunity.

whereas steam is a slower and the steam from the engine would make easily visible and would make it a target for zeds to chase and bandits to attack so steam trains do not mean immunity for passengers aslong as they have fuel.

c'mon just admit 2 trains in a head on in dayz would be hellarius to watch.

It just really doesn't make sense. There isn't enough options or benefits to make it worth any groups time to fix one and fill one with fuel.

The vast majority of organized groups do everything they can to avoid the beach area, and the tracks are only along the beach. Plus, I know of no group that can successfully defend something 24/7 - and talk about something that would get stolen pretty much instantly.

Neat idea, but the benefit of adding it into the game is so low compared to the amount of work it would take it to implement.

it would be a bit of bait for bandit but i guess if cars are used like this nothing can stop trains being used the same and i supose it would drag frame rate down to mud but if devs added more tracks then why not add this to game for both mobility and fun.

Think it would make more sense to have the train be some AI thing that just drives itself along the tracks back and forth, making brief stops at several stations perhaps, just so you can travel from Kamenka to Elektro or Solnichniy or something

agreed. no shitty "realistic" mechanic is necessary.
