Crossbow bolts disappearing

So i found a crossbow and think it's a pretty sweet weapon because it oneshots zeds and is extremely silent, only problem i got so far is that my bolts keep disappearing after i shot zeds. I've read that you're usually able to pick them up after you killed the target. Any informations or tips for me?

Sometimes the seem to disappear completely, other times you can see them but not loot them. Most of the time I can see the bolt and carefully mouse over it until it shows 'Take Steel Bolt'.

I too, love the crossbow - it is by far the best zombie weapon.

Well this happened a few times, too. Fired it, killed the zed and the bolt stuck in mid-air. But i haven't been able to pick up a single bolt after i fired it.

You have never been able to pick them up? Even if in mid-air (does happen) I can pick them up - you just have to be careful about targeting the bolt itself instead of the NPC model. I find that moving back a little bit then slowly moving forward while looking at the bolt tends to help somewhat.

I have been able to pick the bolts up if they are still visible. This may take some finesse, but they can be picked up. I've mainly had issues with them disappearing altogether, roughly ~25% of the time.

To me it seems the only way to guarantee bolt retrieval is to get a head shot, never had a problem getting my bolt back from a head shot. If you hit the torso it's kind of hit or miss if you can get it back. Hopefully we'll be able to just loot the bolt back like any other item soon.

The crossbow is also my favorite weapon right now. Much more satisfying kills and I love the sound it makes.
