Maybe it's shock defness?

So I was running from NWAF enjoying my eggnog much like I am now.  All of a sudden my character moans and a message pops up that I am bleeding and my arm is in extreme pain.  I immediately identify this with being shot, though I heard no shot.  I immediately do a 180 degree turn and start swaying back and forth with no idea where the shot came from or what type of gun it is.  A second shot rang out but misses me.  I hear this one and can discern that is is a mosin and relatively close to me.  I look behind me and see him peeking from around the tree.  I immediately turn around and while swaying back and frorth run directly at him to close thie gap between us  since I realize the mosin is at a horrendous disadvantage in extremly close quarter conflicts.  He ends up dying and after all had calmed.  I was wondering did I not hear the first shot due to shock possibly?  Which would be an awesome mechanic or is it just a bug since we were so close when the first shot rang out.
