Now, you get suspicious around closed door, even more if it is locked and run away if you hear crazy laughing (caused by a prion found in raw human meat). (Persistant)Cheers!1, yes it is random, open doors no longer mean someone has necessarily been there, neither do closed doors mean anything, unless you are super paranoid.2, it does not reset on restart like it used to on non persistent servers, things may or may not randomly spawn. Because of this new system it is, sometimes, a kind of feast or famine thing, depends where you end up. Some places will have loot galore others are Donner Party some are normal. You will find some spots that will spawn items as soon as you pick something up. Servers with persistence off are more like the old loot system.A great addition were the private hives, there is no server hopping on those since each server is unique.
