Where do i start?

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody!

I would like to apologize in advance if i'm breaking any rules by posting this thread, there's just so much information on these forums, i honestly don't know where to start.

I've seen bits and pieces of this game and i'm thrilled by the idea of surviving in a zombie infested wasteland, scavenging whatever i can find. It seems like a real challenge! :D

I'm confused, though, as to where i start. I've read that Dayz requires Arma II to play and i've seen it's available for purchase on Steam, so getting that won't be a problem. What do i do next to be able to play Dayz? I've downloaded the mod from this website, so what do i do with it? It appears to be available on Steam aswell, so if i download Arma II from Steam, would it be better to also get the Dayz mod from Steam?

I've also seen people talk about 'Dayzlauncher' and 'Dayzcommander' around here (apparently programs required to run the mod, i presume...?). Can any1 explain me or direct me to a place where i can learn about how i run this game, because it seems pretty difficult... (i hope i'm wrong :P)

I am a complete noob when it comes to modding, so i kinda need a 'Dayz for dummies guide' =)

Big thanks in advance!

Cheers.

Hi and welcome.  You can either buy DayZ Standalone (SA), or buy Arma II and install the DayZ Mod.  The two games mechanics are a bit different but both take place in the same zombie-infested postapocalypse.

Thanks for replying :D

What do you recommend? Is there a difference in the amount of people playing? In what way are the mechanics different?

Sorry if i'm asking too many questions, but i wanna be sure i get enough info before i buy :D

After that you probably want to join a small none-milsim group.

ok so i've been reading a bit and i've come across this thread:

http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/154360-ok-i-get-it-its-alpha-but-this-is-worse-than-the-mod/

A lot of people complaining about the SA, a lot of people praising it. This was almost a year ago, though. Have there been many bug fixes since then?

To answer your question there has been improvments but there are bugs always replacing old ones that have been fixed

Personally I feel that the majority of complainers may have finally shut up now they are getting what the devteam have added over the past year. But I would get it now for the discount and wait until it enters beta.

Yes, the development of SA has been quite quick, contrary to popular belief. But the decision lies with you. I personally have stopped playing the mod, I feel like its just to clunky for me, and I have had no real interactions playing the mod. From what I have seen, everyone appears pretty hostile. SA isn't much better, but I have definantley had better player to player experiences in SA then in the mod.

If your looking for a complete game, then the mod is perfect, but be warned, it is not being developed anymore. Whereas although SA is an alpha, you can still have fun, plus the first vehicle has been added :D

I agree with Tumble , Buy the SA , It's so much better, I have over 400 hours on the Mod , I think i played just about all of them, And the only one i liked was Vanilla.  There really isant much to do in the Mods except horde the 10 trillions guns you trip over in every building you walk in. At least the ones that you can walk into ,  Most you can't. I know it's just my opinion but i'm SO glad i finally  got the SA and will prob never ever go back to the Mods. Especially with these Kick Butt Updates there adding.

DayZ Standalone will surely be more popular than the Mod.  While it's still in alpha, it it quite playable as many of the major bugs have been fixed.

The Mod is more military-oriented,and you should choose it if you want to play Arma II.

I would suggest getting standalone as its easier to get and start.. The mod takes a bit to do.. Also mod is outdated in my opinion and the arma2 interface is crap.. Standalone is better then mod but got less vehicles and guns at the moment.. But has alot of other features the mod does not and run smoother in my opinion.

Thank you all for your replies! I will probably be buying the SA version, then :)

It's 27.99 on steam now... not much of a discount if you ask me :D

My playing style would be the lone wolf, i think... avoiding contact with other people, but acting firm when i encounter another player. I'm probably not going to kill any1, though... at least if they don't give me the incentive to.

This is going to be fun ^^ when i get a pc that can run the game decently, that i s -_-

Yeah I think the standalone was the best choice. Even if it currently doesn't have as many features as the mod, when it gets caught up it'll be way better than the mod. It already is better, it's just the lack of features that's the problem. But that will be fixed as time goes on.

Exactly, you want people to fall back on. Having people around you makes the game more fun.
