I think it is how many individual instances of ArmA2/DayZ have linked to the mod so far. This isn't the same as characters, as people can just change their name whenever they feel like it (character), whereas each the Unique Players refers to actual players who might have a number of different characters.

I think this is what it refers to anyway.

Think about it. Look at the icons. Do the maths ;)

Player = You

Character = Your character who can die ingame

Avg deaths = average number of characters a player has been through

Makes sense, no? At least I assume it works like this ;)

Every Arma 2 game is tied to one GUID (CD key). Yours, the player's, character is tied to the GUID of your game. That's why you can play with the same character across servers until he dies. That's how the humanity system works, tied to the GUID. That's how the known hackers are banned forever (at least their copy of the game, unless they get a new one)

So basically it's the amount of unique Arma 2 licenses that played DayZ at least once.

/edit: Ninja'ed by JordNZ :)

//edit2: Name change (you can rename your character ingame) doesn't change your GUID.
